Whitewater
Whitewater canoe/kayak is an exhilarating water sport that involves navigating a canoe or kayak through fast-moving rivers and rapids. Athletes maneuver their boat through a series of obstacles, such as rocks, waves, and drops, while maintaining control and speed. Whitewater canoeing and kayaking require a high level of skill, balance, and quick decision-making, as well as the ability to read the river’s current. This can be done solo or tandem.
Whitewater is classified into six levels, known as “classes,” based on the difficulty of the rapids.
Multiple factors are taken into consideration including river width, obstacles and currents. Class I represents easy, moving water with small waves, while Class VI indicates extreme, dangerous conditions that should be done only by professionals.
Whitewater adventures offer thrilling experiences, but safety is always the top priority as there is potential for injury and even death. It is essential to be properly equipped and well-prepared. To avoid dangers, travel with trained guides, scout the area prior to running the rapids, use proper safety equipment and have an emergency preparedness plan.

Whitewater is an umbrella term for various disciplines which includes recreational, canoe polo, slalom, wildwater and freestyle.
Canoe Polo
Canoe Polo is a fast-paced, team sport played on water where two teams of five athletes each navigate kayaks, using paddles to pass and shoot a ball into the opposing team’s goal. Combining elements of water polo, kayaking, and ball-handling skills, players must demonstrate excellent teamwork, strategic thinking, and water navigation skills. Players cannot paddle while in possession of the ball. Canoe polo is the only paddling discipline where you’re likely to see intentional contact. The game is played in a designated water area, with goals at either end, and involves a high level of agility, ball control, and competitive spirit. It’s often played both recreationally and competitively, with world championships held regularly. Canoe polo is a thrilling sport for spectators and participants alike, fostering both physical and mental endurance.
Slalom
Slalom is an Olympic sport where athletes navigate through a challenging course of hanging gates and poles on a controlled, artificial or natural river course. The goal is to complete the course as quickly and cleanly as possible, with penalties added for touching or missing gates. Competitors must maneuver both downstream and upstream through gates using precise paddling and expert control, often battling powerful currents and tight turns. Slalom canoeing combines speed, skill, and strategy.

Wildwater
Wildwater racing is similar to slalom, though it takes place on natural, fast-flowing rivers with no gates. The course is often more unpredictable, featuring rapids, waves, and other natural obstacles. Athletes aim to complete a course in the shortest time possible while handling challenging currents and turbulent water. The sport emphasizes speed, precision, and technical skill, as paddlers must swiftly maneuver through the varying river conditions. Wildwater canoeing is a thrilling test of endurance and agility.

Freestyle
Freestyle whitewater canoeing is an exciting, dynamic sport where paddlers perform acrobatic maneuvers on fast-moving rivers and waves. Using specialized canoes, athletes execute tricks such as spins, flips, and squirts, often in challenging rapids or on specific features like holes and waves. The focus is on creativity, precision, and control, blending skill with the natural flow of water. Freestyle canoeing offers a unique blend of adventure and artistry, ideal for those seeking to push their limits on the river.
