By using adapted equipment, techniques, and training, both recreational and competitive paddling can be inclusive for people with physical, visual, or cognitive disabilities.

Other Disciplines:

CKS thrives in creating space for everyone to get out on the water, and to learn about different paddling disciplines! While the following are not formal CKS disciplines, many of our member clubs also offer opportunities to explore a variety of other paddling activities in Saskatchewan.

Stand Up Paddle Board

Stand up paddling (SUP) is a dynamic water sport that combines elements of surfing and canoeing, offering a unique way to explore a wide range of aquatic environments. Participants stand upright on a specially designed paddleboard, which is wider and more stable than a traditional surfboard, and use a long, single-bladed paddle to propel themselves through the water. SUP can be as relaxing or as challenging as you make it, appealing to beginners looking for a peaceful glide as well as experienced paddlers seeking a full-body workout or even adrenaline-pumping wave riding. The sport enhances balance, strength, and endurance. Its versatility, accessibility, and minimal gear requirements have made stand up paddling one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world.

Big Canoe

A big canoe such as C-15 and a voyageur canoe, is a large, narrow boat typically ranging from 20 to over 40 feet in length, designed to be paddled by a group of 5 to 15 or more people. Built for stability and teamwork, it glides through waters, powered by synchronized strokes from each participant. A big canoe requires coordinated effort to move efficiently, often with one person steering from the back and another setting the pace at the front. Big canoeing is an ideal team-based activity, encouraging communication, rhythm, and cooperation, making it perfect for group outings, team paddling experiences, or outdoor leadership programs. The shared effort required to move the canoe smoothly forward creates a rewarding sense of unity and accomplishment.

Dragon Boating

Dragon boat racing is a vibrant, team-based water sport originating from China, where paddlers race in long, narrow boats adorned with a dragon head and tail. Each boat is typically crewed by 10 to 20 paddlers, a drummer at the front to set the pace, and a steerer at the back. Races are usually held over distances of 200m, 500m, or 2,000m, and require synchronized paddling, teamwork, and endurance. Dragon boat racing blends athleticism with cultural tradition, often celebrated during festivals and international competitions. The sport has gained global popularity for its inclusivity and community spirit, making it a dynamic, fun way to connect with others while enjoying the thrill of the water.
