REGINA (August 15, 2019) – Athletes from across Canada are preparing to travel to Regina to compete in the Canoe Kayak Sprint National Championships. The event, being hosted by the Wascana Racing Canoe Club, runs from August 27 to September 1 and will be held at Wascana Lake. The championships which are in their 120th year, have been hosted in Regina on four other occasions.
Close to 1000 athletes from 40 clubs from across Canada are expected to compete for the title of national champion in various canoe and kayak events over distances of 200, 500, 1000 and 6000 metres. The event also includes para and master events, as well as the Canadian Masters Championship (CanMas).
It is expected that most national team members, including several Olympians, will be in Regina to compete for their home clubs. The senior national team is currently in Szeged, Hungary preparing for the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Championships which runs from August 21 to 25. Saskatchewan athletes who have been on the podium at the national level will compete for their clubs, including some who have represented Canada internationally.
The daily race schedule will consist of heats and finals, with medals being presented at the end of each day. Single boat races (C1 and K1) will kick off the competition on Tuesday and Wednesday. Crew boat races (K2, K4 and C4 and War Canoe/C15) start Thursday and Paracanoe and Masters races get underway on Friday. The main part of the competition will wrap up on Saturday with burgees being presented to the clubs winning the most points. CanMas takes place on September 1.
A number of social events will also be held in conjunction with the national championships. It is also expected that the national team be on hand to sign autographs and meet with the public.

A Media Guide will be circulated and posted on the event website prior to the event. The guide which will include complete information about the sport, the championships, the race schedule and the national team athletes in attendance.
During the competition, media will be provided on-water access to the venue for photo and film opportunities. Interviews with athletes, event and sport representatives can also be facilitated.
