11th Annual Churchill River Whitewater Festival

For last year’s festival theme we were looking back on the great times that we had over the first decade that the festival has been running. The thing that really struck us last year was all the young new faces and youthful energy at the festival. It really made us realize that a whole new generation of paddlers are beginning to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and amazing paddling of Saskatchewan’s north. Keeping this in mind and given the fact that the festival is now in it’s second decade, this year we want to look forward and give back to this amazing place and community. So, we are planning to use the festival to try to revitalize the Friends of the Churchill stewardship program. The area has seen incredible growth in the number of people visiting over the past several years. While it is wonderful to see more and more people enjoying the Churchill River, it has impacted the local ecology, portage trails, and campsites in the area. We are hoping that going forward, we can use the festival as a platform for raising funds to make improvements to the area and serve as an educational tool for participants. Volunteers Make the Difference – Remembering Merv Woods with Regina Marathon Canoe Club

Volunteers Make the Difference – Remembering Merv Woods with Regina Marathon Canoe Club

We all need volunteers. Volunteers are the driving force to get things done. They possess drive and initiative, they are responsible, and work on their own accord without needing to be assigned, ordered, or told what to do. They love their community and want to see it flourish and thrive. They aren’t looking for payment but relish in the success of their community. Merv Woods was one such volunteer with the Regina Marathon Canoe Club. During his time with the club he became a certified coach, and then shared his knowledge with countless paddlers, both new and old. He helped our club grow by building infrastructure, improving the management, leadership and governance of our local club as well as the provincial organization. Above all else, Merv shared his love of paddling which permeated out to all who were blessed to be around him. In recognition of his dedication to our club, the Lumsden boat house was named The Merv Woods...

Posted by Lauren Erickson with Saskatoon Canoe Club As a current SCC Volunteer Board Member, I  cannot think of just one person, but of all the boards of all the clubs in Saskatchewan that deserve recognition. It is a very hard job and a lot of work goes into putting on a successful paddling season. Posted by Edith MacHattie with Saskatoon Canoe Club Marathon Division I would thank all the volunteers who come out year after year to help officiate, plan and prepare for races, mentor new members, repair club equipment, and generally offer their services to the SCC Marathon Division so that we can offer great experiences for all members and those visiting us. Thank you all volunteers with Saskatoon Canoe Club who make every paddling experience one to...
