Kylie Zirk: on overcoming obstacles and finding confidence again.

  Have you ever been blindsided by an obstacle that derails all your goals? Have you been at your desk with your head in your hands thinking, “what do I do now”? You are not alone and although we, at CKS, love to share the success stories of our athletes we also want to show you their grit, determination and ability to persevere. Kylie has been kind enough to share some of her recent struggles and how she found her way back to the pursuit of excellence. Read her perspective below! I have been doing whitewater slalom for almost seven years now, and the last year and a half have been the hardest of my journey so far. In May 2015, I was competing at Senior National Team Trials when I flipped over during the race and hit my head on a rock underwater. This accident resulted in a concussion that left me unable to train or do any activity for months. I missed competing in the Canadian National Championships that year. The first time I was able to be back in a boat to try going for a light, easy paddle was over three months after the hit to my head.  At that point I was still suffering from constant headaches, but they hadn’t been worsened by light activity so I could start slowly returning to paddling and being active. It was the end of November before I was able to go back to the gym and start training again.
